Create a Cooperative New Year! Ready for the BEDC Cooperative Pitch?

This year we’re excited to bring you a diverse range of cooperative (coop) business development opportunities, inclusive of an Introduction to Coops Power Workshop and a Coop Business Idea Pitch! Read on for more information!

What is the Cooperative Pitch?

It’s an amazing opportunity for 3-person teams who have a workable idea for a local coop business to compete to win business development support and cash prizes.  Short listed coop pitch teams will then be invited to pitch to our judge’s panel, all to take place with a live studio audience. BEDC is committed to helping winning teams get their coop ideas off the ground!

We have 3 Coop pitch team categories:

  • Millennial Makers – for teams 37 years and under
  • Sports Club Creators – All Sports Clubs
  • Bermuda Open – for any 3-person team meeting the below criteria

Not sure what a Cooperative is?

Not a problem! That’s where our Introduction to Cooperatives Power Workshop comes in! We want to make sure that those participating in the Coop Pitch fully understand the key business planning foundations of a coop, how a coop differs from a traditional Bermuda business, the benefits of starting a coop, community impact opportunities and of course the judge’s decision-making criteria so you can be best poised to win.

The mandatory Introduction to Cooperatives Power Workshops will be for held over the following 3 consecutive Wednesday evenings.

  • Wednesday, Feb 12th – 6pm to 8:30pm
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19th – 6pm to 8:30pm
  • Wednesday, Feb. 26th – 6pm to 8:30pm

All sessions will be held within our BEDC training room at Sofia House, Church Street.

Want to participate in the Cooperative Pitch? That’s great! Here’s what you need to know to enter:

  • The minimum age to enter is 16 years.
  • To participate you will need a team of at least three persons; coops are member-owned businesses with democratic control, so it’s all about the WE 😉 (not ME).
  • For the Sports Club category, you must be representing an existing member-owned football, cricket or sailing sports club.
  • At least one member must have participated in our Cooperative Power Workshop.
  • If your team members attended BEDC’s November 5th & 6th Coop Champions Workshop you do not have to participate in the Introduction to Cooperatives Power Workshop
  • At least 2/3rds of your team must be Bermudian.

What is the date of the Coop Pitch Final Competition?

The preliminary Pitches (1st round) for everyone will take place on Wednesday, March 4th at BEDC, 6pm to 9pm.

The Coop Pitch Finals will be held Wednesday, March 11th at a venue TBC.
